The Internet Media Group research activity, led by prof. Angelo Raffaele Meo and prof. Juan Carlos De Martin, focuses on multimedia (speech, audio, video) processing and transmission over communication networks.

As interdisciplinary as required by modern technology and services, this group studies and proposes advanced techniques for multimedia applications such as streaming, videoconferencing, voice over IP, that guarantee optimal utilization of network resources and high perceptive quality for the end-user. The main focus is on state-of-the-art multimedia coding formats (e.g., GSM-AMR, AAC, H.264) and data delivery over IP packet networks, especially on the emerging wireless scenarios (e.g., wi-fi, ad-hoc, inter-vehicle). Some of these techniques have also been implemented in hardware and software projects such as LScube, a complete software suite for multimedia streaming over IP networks, and ViCoTrA, a real-time analyser (on a DSP board) of the complete video coding and transmission chain.

The Internet Media Group is also very active in the topics of knowledge sharing. In particular, with regards to free software, prof. Angelo Raffaele Meo (who is now the president of the Academy of Sciences of Torino) was the president of the "Commissione Ministeriale sull’Open Source" with the aim to study the impact of the adoption of the open source in the Italian public administration. While, with regards to the sharing of creative contents, prof. Juan Carlos De Martin is the project lead of Creative Commons Italy

VICSUM Workshop - wed 11.11.2009 - Villa Gualino (Torino)

The Internet Media Group will partecipate on Wednesday November 11, 2009 to the final workhop of VICSUM, a project lead by prof. Claudio Casetti of the Department of Electronics of the Politecnico di Torino, in collaboration with Centro Ricerche Fiat and CSP Inlab. Our main contribution focuses on the development of mechanisms for the reliable transmission of multimedia flows in a vehicular environment where ad hoc networking enables the coverage of dark areas outside the range of the fixed network infrastructure.
